Aaron (“Ray”) Fischman, 95, of Mountainside, New Jersey, passed away Wednesday evening, October 9. Visitors will be received on Tuesday, October 15, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 267 Centre Street, Nutley, New Jersey.

Born and raised in Newark, Ray moved to Nutley in 1949, where he and his wife raised a family and resided for more than forty years. He later moved to Belleville, following his wife’s passing, and most recently lived in West Orange and Mountainside. One of the Greatest Generation, he proudly served his country with his brother in the Army during World War II. Following his discharge, he attended and graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in chemistry and biology. Having a strong sense of family loyalty, he joined the family business in Newark following his graduation.

He enjoyed reading the newspaper daily and keeping current with the news, discussing politics, doing crossword puzzles, watching college and professional sports, and playing cards. He was a diehard Rutgers football fan, regardless of how the team performed. He loved spending time with his family. He will especially be remembered for his wisdom, fairness, concern for those less fortunate, and always rooting for the underdog!

A loving and caring father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Ray is survived by his loving children: Ronnie Fischman Plasner of Woodbridge, New Jersey, Elaine Fischman of Mill Valley, California, Franne Mannino and her husband, Tadd, of San Diego, California, and Phil Fischman and his wife Valeri, of Vista, California. Also surviving are his grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Tracy Plasner Mijanovic and her husband, Jovan, Brian Plasner and his wife Laura, Laurie Plasner Hurst and her husband, Fred, and Kate Mannino. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, who were the light of his life: Joseph and Matthew Mijanovic, Isabella, Alissa, and Marco Plasner, and Michael, Tyler, and Derek Hurst. Ray considered himself blessed to have the special friendship of Ann Dougherty. He was predeceased by his wife, Leda (Lee), his brother, Leonard, and his parents, Sadie (Dittelman) and Abraham.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to one of Ray’s favorite charities, the St. John of God Archbishop Damiano School, 1145 Delsea Drive, Westville, NJ 08093 (, or the charity of your choice.
