Afonso Dionisio, 93 of Newark, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 7, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his wife, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Born in Figueiró da Serra, Gouveia, Portugal, he was the son of the late Francisco and Soledade de Jesus (Ferreira) Dionisio. Prior to immigrating to the United States in 1981, Afonso settled in Gabela, Angola with his wife, Rosario, and later welcomed two daughters, Teresa and Luisa. He spent his days working as a bicycle assembly plant operator before retiring.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Maria Do Rosario (Pires) Dionisio, his children, Teresa Olivares (Tomas Olivares) and Luisa Ribeiro (John Ribeiro). He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Michelle, Tomas Eric, Katherine, Jennifer, Daniel, and Joanne as well as his great-grandchildren, Julianna, Nathaniel, and Isabella. Afonso will be lovingly remembered for his sense of humor, wine making skills, and devotion to his family.
Visitors will be received at the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, 267 Centre St. Nutley Wednesday February 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield.
