Anna Popadycz, 90 and a half, of Nutley passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at her home. She had been under hospice care for the last several months.
Born in a bucolic village in northern Baveria, Germany, she emigrated to the US in 1955, where she met and married her late husband Stephan. Together they bought the house on Friedland Road in Nutley where Anna has lived the last 51 years.
Anna will be recognized by many Nutleyites as an avid walker who could be seen with her shopping cart--well into her eighties-- marching to and from ShopRite, a mile away.
Along with Stephan, she was a skilled gardener, and the tomatoes from their vegetable garden were renowned throughout the neighborhood. One year Anna even won an award for her tomatoes at a local event.
Anna loved being outdoors and-- when not puddling around her yard-- could be found walking (or biking in her younger days) through Nutley parks. She also loved travel. Nothing brought her greater joy than visiting her daughter in Washington state and exploring the mountains nearby. One of her fondest memories was a camping trip to Mt. Rainier National Park where she picnicked and built a roaring campfire one evening. At age eighty she could still crawl into a tent and love the experience of camping!
Wife of the late Stephan Popadycz, she is survived by her beloved daughter Sonia and sister Martha. She is predeceased by her brothers Conrad and Hans, her elder sister Lina and favorite little sister Ella.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to American Red Cross at 209 Fairfield Road, Fairfield, NJ 07004.
