Obituary for Anthony Di Petta

Anthony Di Petta, Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class, US Navy, was killed in action on September 10, 1944. Born in Collendanchise,Campobasso Province, Italy he lived in Nutley. He was the beloved son of the late Sisto and Filomenia (Bernardo) Di Petta. Anthony was an Aviation Ordnanceman, serving aboard the USS Enterprise (CV-6), when the Grumman Avenger Torpedo Bomber on which he was a crewman, was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire over the vacinity of the Malakal Naval District Palau Islands. His aircraft and remains were located and positively identified in 2021. AOM1 Di Petta was repatriated, with the dignified transfer of remains ceremony at LaGuardia International Airport on July 7, 2023.

Visitors will be recieved at the S.W. Brown and Son Funeral Home, 267 Centre Street, Nutley, NJ on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 from 9:30-10:30am.

A Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 120 Prospect Street, Nutley, NJ at 11:00am.

The procession will then proceed to the Nutley World War II Memorial on Vincent Place where a brief ceremony will be conducted and then to Columbia Avenue, site of the former Di Petta residence. The procession will then continue on to the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Road Wrightstown, NJ where he will be laid to rest with full military honors.
