Obituary for Anthony "Bob" Dirienzo

Anthony “Bob” Dirienzo, 92 of Nutley, passed away on Saturday December 14, 2019 at home. Born in Nutley, he was the son of the late Berardino and Maria Concetta (Salimbano) Direnzo. Mr. Direnzo lived in Millington, NJ before returning to Nutley 5 years ago. He retired as a research engineer from Foster-Wheeler Inc. in Livingston. Bob served as a Merchant Marine officer and later enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War. He served as the Engineering Officer aboard the destroyer USS Mullany (DD-528), leaving active duty as a Lieutenant (JG) and entering the Navy Retired Reserve in 1966. Bob was also a Masters status bridge player.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis (Bursese) Dirienzo, his daughters, Kathy Courain and husband, Thomas, Karen Scher and husband, David, his son, David Dirienzo, his loving grandchildren, Elizabeth, John, Aaron, Samuel and Anya and his great grandchildren, Estela, Luke and Giorgia. He was predeceased by his 7 brother and sisters.

Visitors will be received at the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, 267 Centre St. Nutley on Thursday December 19 from 4-8 pm.

Friends are kindly asked to proceed directly to Holy Family Church, Nutley on Friday December 20 where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am.

Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield.
