Obituary for Catherine Cowley
Catherine M. Cowley, 81, of Belleville, NJ, died on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at University Hospital in Newark, NJ. She was born in Jersey City and grew up in Bayonne before moving to Belleville 67 years ago.
Visitation will be on Friday, February 17, 2023 from 9:30am to 10:30am at St. Peter’s R.C. Church, 155 William Street, Belleville, NJ, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30am at St. Peter’s Church. Interment will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery. Arrangements are by S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home.
Catherine attended Holy Family Academy in Bayonne and graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Newark. She received her B.S. and M.A. in Education from Seton Hall University. Catherine taught at Our Lady of Good Counsel Grammar School for 6 years and at Washington School in Kearny, NJ for 34 years. She loved to travel and was an avid reader who loved to teach reading.
She was active at St. Peter’s Church, serving on the Liturgy Committee of the Parish Pastoral Council, and as a Eucharist Minister and a member of the Lazarus Team. She also volunteered in the Pastoral Care Ministry at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville. And Catherine served on the Advisory School Board of Our Lady of Good Counsel and was active in its Alumni Association.
Catherine was predeceased by her loving parents, Michael Cowley and Catherine (nee Dowd), her brother, James, and a special aunt, Betty Dowd. She is survived by her beloved sister, Elizabeth Ann Cowley, several loving cousins and many cherished friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Peter’s Church, 155 William St., Belleville, NJ, or to the charity of one’s choice.
