Obituary for Edelma Falla (Mendez)

Edelma Falla, nee Mendez, 94, formerly of Hoboken, NJ passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, at Emerson Health and Rehabilitation Center, Emerson, NJ. During her final days, she was surrounded by her devoted son, Juan Falla and his wife Kim, and nursing home staff who treated her as family and lovingly cared for her.

Edelma was born May 21, 1926, in Santa Isabel de las Lajas, Cuba to Alejandro and Damasa Mendez. She married Luis A. Falla in January 1953 who preceded her death on August 3, 1990.

Edelma had a passion for fashion, which she acquired at an early age by mimicking her older sister and stitching together doll-size dresses from scraps of material. It was her skill as a seamstress and her hard work that greatly helped to support her family and create a new life in the United States after arriving from Cuba in 1966. Always a tireless worker even in retirement, neighbors will remember her smile as she trimmed a small tree that impossibly sprouted from a crack in the sidewalk; of course, often elegantly dressed for the task.

Edelma is survived by her sister Ana Maria Mendez, her son Juan Falla and his wife Kim, as well as her two stepchildren, Luis Falla and Maria Antonia Falla Cubria, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
