Obituary

Elena G. (Anania) Costello, 89 of Nutley, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020. Born in Newark, the daughter of the late James and Susan (Bagnola) Anania, Elena dedicated her life to her family. She attended Barringer High School and moved to Nutley 65 years ago. She owned and operated Costello’s Meat Market in Nutley, alongside her husband Larry, before retiring in 1989. Elena was involved with Nutley Concerned Citizens as well as the Elks and Unico Auxiliaries. She was an avid reader and loved to cook the most delicious Italian meals and host large family gatherings.

The beloved wife of the late Lawrence D. Costello, she was a loving mother and is survived by her children, Dr. Lauren Costello, Lawrence L. Costello, Lynn Costello, and Leslie Torres and her husband, Edward; a sister Josephine Anania; and her grandchildren whom she adored, Tyler and Melissa Torres. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents and husband, Elena was predeceased by her siblings, Gus, Rose, Sonny, James, Danny, and Nana.

In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a donation in Elena’s name, please choose your favorite charity.

Due to the current health crisis, funeral services will be conducted privately. A celebration of Elena’s life will be planned by the family at a later date.
