Obituary for Ethel Quick

Loving Mother, Sister & Grandmother

Ethel L. Quick née Grady was born May 15, 1934 in Bennettsville, South Carolina. Ethel being the eldest daughter of Ted and Gladys Grady relocated to New Jersey in 1951. In 1956 she was blessed with her eldest daughter Denise Cooke. Being a hard worker she and her mother Ethel and her mother Gladys broke milestones in the 1950’s by being black women who purchased a two family home in Newark New Jersey.
In 1959 Ethel met and married Prentiss Quick and from that loving union came their treasured daughter Toni Quick.
From the mid 1950’s to the 60’s Ethel worked at RCA with her sister Angie McGriff. Shortly thereafter she, husband Prentiss and brother Maso, purchased the Wheel Bar and began their own successful family owned business. Ethel worked at both the Wheel Bar and Sydneys (owned by brothers Maso and Ted).
Besides working in the family businesses Ethel worked at an electronics firm building mother boards for computers and decided in her early 60’s to become a certified Home Health Aide. She was so proud of this accomplishment and marveled how her senior clients believed her to be younger than them, which was usually not the case.
Ethel was known for her culinary treats..., the 4-5 layer Chocolate Cake, the Pineapple Coconut Cake that her brothers would argue over, Sweet Potatoes pie, the infamous Mac n Cheese and her Great granddaughters favorite Salmon Croquettes. Ethel always had an interest in herbal remedies and regularly had a brew or tea to deal with “whatever was ailing you”
Ethel enjoyed crocheting, need point, bowling and chatting with her friends and family.
She was a trusted confidant and was regularly called upon for advice.
Ethel traveled with her daughter Toni and BFF Alberta Daniels. In her travels she always met and made new friends.
Ethel departed this life quietly and peacefully Thursday, September 27th, leaving behind in God’s loving hands her daughters, Denise Cooke and Toni Quick; son in-law Keith Cooke; Toni’s fiancé Paul Davis; two granddaughters Nicole Humphreys; Nicole’s fiancé Jason Torres, Ariell Cooke; two great granddaughters Imani Humphreys-Torres and Amya Humphreys-Torres; sister Dianne Mayo; one niece Chrissy Allan, and nephews Robin Grady, Kevin Grady, Wayne McGriff, Keith Grady, Eric McGriff, Teddy Grady, Brian Grady.
Ethel was preceded by her brothers, Ted Grady, Maso Grady, her sister Angie McGriff and parents Ted and Gladys Grady.
Ethel leaves us to cherish her memories and we know that her bright spirit can never be extinguished.
