Obituary for Evelyn Blythe

Evelyn Marion Blythe (née Dittes) died peacefully on March 23, 2019 in Newton, New Jersey at the age of 93. The family is grateful for the wonderful caregivers at Bristol Glen who have become her friends and neighbors recently. Their dedication and efforts made her stay there a welcoming adventure in her final years.

Evelyn is survived by her favorite nephew, George Eugene Cassidy (Blairstown), her favorite niece, Dale Crooks Watters (Nutley), grandnieces Cori Cassidy Hatcher(Cincinnati) and Cynthia Cassidy Grau (Bedminster); stepsons Joseph Blythe (Arizona), Richard Blythe Jr. (Maine), and stepdaughters Agnes Balandis of (South Carolina) and Mary Cartwright( Iselin.) Although she did not have any children of her own she was blessed with twenty-eight grandchildren; thirty-two great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by Richard Blythe, loving husband, siblings George Dittes, Jessica Dittes Cassidy, Alice Dittes Sturm, and Vera Dittes Crooks, and niece Alice Crooks.

Evelyn was born on November 25, 1925 in Newark, NJ to George and Jessica Cochran Dittes. She graduated from West Side High School in Newark in 1944. She held jobs at a bingo parlor in Keansburg and the local five and dime before working full-time at Wilbur B. Driver Company in Newark. Evelyn stayed with the company for forty years, advancing from shipping clerk to executive secretary before retiring in 1984.

In her early years, Evelyn loved bowling, traveling, and going to New York City. She spent New Year’s Eve in Times Square, attended the World’s Fair, and loved attending family events. One of her fondest memories was being asked to sit in the front row at one of Frank Sinatra’s shows as she was dressed appropriately, unlike the bobby soxers.

A long-time resident of Roselle Park, Evelyn was an active member of the Second Presbyterian Church in Newark and lately was associated with the Fewsmith Church in Belleville. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Visitors will be received at S.W. Brown and Son in Nutley on Thursday from 4pm – 8pm.

The funeral service will be at 10:00am on Friday starting at the funeral home.

The interment will follow at Hollywood Memorial Park in Union.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to any charity of your choice. Evelyn gave to virtually all charities and it is likely that if you have a favorite, it was on her list.
