Obituary for Grace G. Doherty (Orth)
Grace Gertrude Doherty (nee Orth), 82 of Nutley, passed away on Sunday February 2, 2020 at her home. Grace was born on June 6, 1937 in Orange, NJ to W. Herbert and Grace G. Orth. She graduated from Clara Maas Nursing School in Belleville, NJ. She married Vincent S. Doherty in 1961 and settled in Nutley, NJ where they raised their family.
Grace worked as a Registered Nurse at Clara Maas Hospital, helping deliver and care for newborns. She brought her strong work ethic, humor and sense of family in all she did. She grew roses in her yard, often asking her children to bring a bloom to their teacher. Grace introduced her three girls to Scouting, acting as leader in Brownie and Girl Scout Troops. She introduced her son to Scouting, acting as a “depot manager” for the many cookie and candy fundraisers. She brought her love of nature, gardening and the outdoors to her children and grandchildren.
Grace is survived by her daughters, Claire Grace of Flanders, NJ and Ardra Jane of Nutley, NJ; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael Hugh and Maria Emily of Port Murray, NJ; her brother and sister-in-law, Walter H. and Roberta Orth; and seven grandchildren, Steven, Joseph, Kelly, Aidan, Emma, Maeve and Liam and a great grandson, Tyler. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Vincent; her sister, Carol Z. Smith and her daughter, Tracy Nutile.
The funeral will be from the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, 267 Centre St. Nutley on Friday February 7 at 9 am.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Bloomfield at 10 am followed by entombment at East Ridgelawn Cemetery in Clifton.
Visitors will be received at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8 pm.
