Obituary for Gregory L. Philpott

Gregory Lee Philpott, a mental health counselor and life-long learner, died unexpectedly on December 27, 2020 at the age of 54, at his home in Nutley, NJ.

Greg is survived by his wife, Beverly Grady; his children, Katherine and Meghan Philpott; his brother Robert C. Philpott, sister Linda J. Poole, and twin brother Jeffrey L. Philpott; brothers-in-law John D. Poole and Daniel Molnar, Robert Parran, Lawrence Cannataro, and Larry Mitschow; nieces Julie Foster and Jennifer Jones; nephew Obidah Philpott; sisters-in-law, Jacqueline Cannataro, Beverly Parran, Judy Mitschow; stepbrother Steven Austin; cousins Tom, Scott, and Jan Williamson; many great nieces and nephews; and extended family across the United States and in Northern Ireland.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, as well as his stepmother Belva H. Philpott, his nephew J. Matthew Poole, his grandparents, his mother-in-law Bertha Grady, his sister-in-law Gladys Grady-Campana and her husband, Don.

Greg was born in Fullerton, California on May 23, 1966 to Charles B. Philpott and Irene E. Hastie Philpott. He spent his childhood in Pocatello, Idaho where he made life-long friends with a group of honorary brothers and sisters: Eric Van Orden and his wife Tracy Lewis Van Orden, Mark Arstein, Eric Baker, Jill Moller Ludwig, Marla and Meredith Swassing, Darrell Warner, Tal Sampson, Mike Farnsworth, Tracy Sibley, David McCann, and Robbie England Garrett.

His athletic ability helped him earn a scholarship to play football at Dickinson College where he studied Political Science and graduated in 1989. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and he maintained decades-long friendships with many of his fraternity brothers, such as Sanford Stein, John Turk III, Robert Maryott, John Saleda, and Patrick Hehir.

In 1993 and 1995, Greg welcomed his two daughters into the world with ex-wife, Margaret Randazzo. Although the two divorced, they remained committed to co-raising their beautiful daughters. On April 12, 2008, Greg was blessed to marry his soulmate Beverly Grady with whom he enjoyed hiking, traveling, spending time with family, and watching their favorite old films.

Always intellectually curious, Greg earned his first Master’s degree in Public Administration from Idaho State University in 1992, and later pursued a Master of Science in Urban Education from Mercy College in 2007. In 2011, in recognition of his outstanding scholastic achievement and excellence, Greg was inducted into Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology. Then, in 2014, Greg completed his Master of Arts in Psychology with emphasis in Clinical Psychology while pursuing his PhD at Fielding Graduate University. He had success in a range of fields including sales, education, and most recently counseling, a calling he came to later in life.

In addition to being a devoted husband and father, Greg is remembered for being endlessly resilient, caring, and loving. He was silly, fun-loving and good-natured, and was passionate about helping people. He had a talent for reviving an old joke and was a terrific storyteller. Greg will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.

A memorial service celebrating Greg’s life and legacy will take place at S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home in Nutley, New Jersey on January 16th, 2021 from 2 PM–4PM EST. Livestreaming of the service will be available for those who wish to attend virtually.
