Obituary for Harry C. Reddington

Harry C. Reddington passed away peacefully on December 4, 2022 at the age of 91. Harry was predeceased by his wife Gertrude and his brother Francis X. Reddington, and is survived by his daughter Kerry Reddington and her husband Jared Henry, daughter Kristine Reddington and her husband Jeff Herlyn, his four beloved grandchildren Sloane and Sullivan Henry and Meaghan and Drew Herlyn, his sister Claire Harty and her husband Harry, his sister Cathy Beahan, his sister Mary Ruggieri and her husband Bill, his sister-in-law Mary Reddington, sister-in-law Ellen Law, brother-in-law William Arata and his wife Fulvia, and brother-in-law Joe Arata and his wife Daralyn, as well as dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins who adored him.

Harry was born and raised in Newark, of which he was always proud. He attended Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School and Jersey City State Teachers College where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and met the love of his life Gertrude Arata. He received a Masters in Education Administration and Supervision at Seton Hall University, as well as a Masters as a Reading Specialist at William Paterson University and a Certification as a Learning Disabilities Specialist from the State of New Jersey.

Harry and Gert married in 1956 after his service in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict - 3rd Army Signal Corps - and then moved to Nutley, NJ where he lived until his death. Harry taught for his entire career in Nutley, beginning as a sixth grade teacher in Washington School, then as a remedial reading teacher, then as a learning disabilities specialist. He touched the lives of many hundreds of students.

Harry retired in 1996 and enjoyed all of his retirement years to the fullest. He was an avid magician, horse racing enthusiast, wine connoisseur, sports fan, reader, traveler, golfer, movie buff, New York City tour guide and had many other interests that fueled his insatiable intellectual curiosity. He was described by many as the kindest gentleman they knew.

Harry loved spending time with his grandchildren, attending all of their sports and dance events, and his lifelong friends from college, Nutley and the Montclair Beach Club. Harry was thankful for everyone who included him in so many things after Gert passed, which made his last 11 years full and happy. He was going full steam ahead until just weeks before he died, enjoying 91st birthday celebrations in New York City, Connecticut and New Jersey.

Harry literally left us with one of his favorite quotes: “Dying is easy .. comedy is hard!”

A memorial Mass in celebration of Harry’s life will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, January 6. 2023 at St. Clare Church in Clifton.
