Obituary for John P. Yankowski

John P. Yankowski passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at Clark Rehab and Nursing. He was born on November 26, 1920. Originally from the Ironbound Section of Newark, he lived in Nutley for 54 years where he raised his family along with his wife, Edith. He most recently resided in Cranford.
After 42 years, John retired from Western Electric, Kearny. A member of the Greatest Generation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served on the USS LCI(L)-976 as a Pharmacist’s Mate First Class in the South Pacific.
His family was most important to him. John was frequently lending a helping hand to family and neighbors. A child of the Depression, he was poised to use his ingenuity to fix just about anything. John was happiest when tinkering around the house. He was a great proponent of exercise.
He is survived by his daughter, Terry, and son, John; son-in-law, Tom; daughter-in-law, Debbie; his grandchildren, Christopher, Julianne and Kyle Herron, Jeff (Laura) Yankowski and Kelley (Dan) Sarnelle; and great-grandson, Brayden Sarnelle. He was predeceased by his wife, Edith (Buck); his siblings, Anthony (Rose) Thomas, Veronica (Edward) Erni, Julia (Patsy) Lepore, Helen (Albert) Price, Joseph (Mary) Yankowski, Mary Yankowski, Vincent Jankauskas; and his goddaughter, Patricia Golas.
Described by many as a good man and true gentleman, he will be sorely missed.

Interment will be at Glendale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Foodbank of New Jersey, 31 Evans Terminal, Hillside, NJ 07205. www.cfbnj.org
