Obituary for Joseph Francis Macula

Joseph Francis Macula, age 71, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2018, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born on February 19, 1947 in Jersey City, New Jersey, the son of the late Ida (Torchio) and Anthony Macula.

Joseph grew up in Jersey City and graduated from Saint Anthony High School and actively supported the school until it closed. Joseph graduated from Saint Peter’s College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. While at Saint Peter’s, Joseph was a member of the ROTC and the football team.

Joseph is survived by his beloved wife, Adele (Bednash) Macula, whom he married on August 3, 1986. She was the love of his life! They lived in Nutley, NJ for more than 30 years, enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and the USA, and spending time with family and friends.

Joseph’s extensive career as a business professional, with expertise in all areas of accounting and finance, began in the banking industry. Joseph worked for First Jersey National Bank, Edison Bank, and First National Bank of Piscataway (NJ) where he was Vice President/Senior Lending Officer. His career then moved on to fiscal management of municipal operations. He was employed by the City of Jersey City, NJ for eighteen years. Joseph served as Chief Fiscal Officer (HR Department), Chief Accountant/City Comptroller (Finance Department) and Assistant Director/Chief Financial Officer (Water Department) for thirteen years, culminating with the development of a public-private partnership privatizing the municipal water utility through the award of an operation/ maintenance contract with a private entity. Joseph’s last career move led him to employment at United Water Resources/Suez (NJ) for sixteen years, until his retirement in October 2012. Joseph held various executive positions related to finance and contract services (Director), contract operations (General Manager) and external affairs/client relations (Manager).

Joseph was the owner of the Village Inn, a popular pub/restaurant in Jersey City, during the 1980’s.

Through the years, Joseph supported many communities. He served on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hudson County since 2006. He was Board Vice-President since 2013. He was awarded the Brian C. Doherty Community Service Award in 2011 and inducted into the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hudson County Hall of Fame that same year. Joseph actively supported the arts. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Union County Performing Arts Center (Rahway, NJ) since 2005. He received the Rahway (NJ) Business Partnership Community Service Award in 2006. Since 2003, Joseph was a member of the Bergen County, NJ Police Chiefs Association.

Joseph is survived by his extended family - Leonard Bednash and his wife, Tracey, and their children; Richard Bednash and his wife, Jo Anne, and their children; and David Bednash and his wife, Ashley, and their children. He is also survived by many special loving cousins and their families.

Joseph’s humility and sense of humor won him many lifelong friendships that he held dear. He will be remembered lovingly by his many special friends. He died as he lived, everyone’s friend.

Joseph was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Francis Anthony Macula.

Family, friends, and others whose lives Joseph touched are invited to the S. W. Brown and Son Funeral Home, 267 Centre Street, Nutley, NJ, from 2-4 and 7-9pm on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, to reminisce, grieve, support each other, and celebrate Joseph’s memory.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2019, at 10:30am at Holy Family RC Church, 28 Brookline Avenue, Nutley, New Jersey. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home at 9:30am. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, New Jersey.
