Obituary for Marie Stankewitz (Cullen)

Loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother

Marie B. Stankewitz of Nutley passed away on Thursday October 11, 2018.
Marie lived in the home she where she and her husband raised their family until 2016. She was a member of the Nutley Golden Age serving as Secretary for many years. She was also a very active member of the VFW Post 493 Woman's Auxiliary and she held the position of State President several times. Marie worked for the Township of Nutley for many years running the Nutrition Program at the parks and recreation building in town serving lunch to the senior citizens. Marie also did volunteer work at Clara Maass Hospital and the VA Hospital in East Orange. Marie was a giving person who was always willing to help another even if it was giving a ride to someone who could not drive to her club meetings. Marie was a crafter, she knitted, crocheted, embroidered and sewed to mention a few. Many grandchildren's Halloween costumes were made by Grandma. She was always creating something new. Marie was a hands on Mom and Grandmother she was always there to help whenever she could. She was very proud of her Family and her Grandchildren; watching as they grew into adulthood and successfully started their lives. Marie was predeceased by her loving husband, John E. Stankewitz in 1995 and her beloved son, Stephen Robert in 2015. Marie was also predeceased by her parents Matthew and Dorothy (Rebold) Cullen, her siblings, Charles Edward and Dorothy Cullen, Ann Kay, Margaret Sass and Matthew Cullen. Marie is survived by her daughter, Kathleen A. Ciccone and daughter Marie Van Ness. She also leaves her grandchildren, John J. VanNess Jr. (Lisa), Dominique-Marie Tetzlaff (James), Kristen Van Ness, Melissa Ann Turre (Anthony), Jessica & Melanie Thomas and her beloved great-grandchildren, Jenna Mae, Cassandra Leigh, Liam Joseph, Lindsey Grace, Zoey Marie, Cheyenne Katherine, Evangeline Lily, Juno Elizabeth, Matthew, Adam and Amanda.

Relatives and Friends are invited to a memorial gathering at the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, 267 Centre St. Nutley on Tuesday October 16 from 8:30 to 10:30 am. A Funeral Mass will also be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 am at Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington at 11 am followed by committal at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield.
