Obituary for Marilyn B. Hannon

Marilyn Hannon, 81, a lifelong resident of Nutley, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2023. Marilyn was born in Newark, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Palo) Mattiello. A devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother, Marilyn is survived by her beloved husband Edward of 57 years, her son Kevin and his wife Cindi, her son Joseph and his wife Colleen, her grandchildren Charles (CJ) and Katherine (Katie) and her brother Ralph Mattiello.

Marilyn dedicated her career to the young children of Nutley as an elementary school teacher at Spring Garden School for 39 years before retiring. She graduated from William Paterson University after attending Nutley High School. She participated as a member of the Education Association of Nutley, the Golden Age Club, and was formerly active with the Nutley American Little League Women’s Auxiliary.

For Marilyn, her family and close friends were everything. She lived her entire life on Margaret Avenue in Nutley, moving directly across the street from her parents after she married. A loving daughter to her parents, Marilyn especially enjoyed shopping trips to the mall with her mother. Family traditions were extremely important to Marilyn. These included Sunday dinners at her parents’ house and then continuing her mother’s holiday traditions, including baking a variety of Christmas cookies, hosting the traditional Italian Christmas Eve dinner, and baking Easter pies. Attendance at her children’s and grandchildren’s events and milestones were Marilyn’s happiest and proudest moments.

Marilyn loved to travel, especially cruising, where she and Edward shared several wonderful trips to various areas of the world. She also cherished many trips to Wildwood as a child, and then with her family as a mother. She treasured time with friends including travels, New Year’s celebrations, and dinner gatherings. But most simply and importantly, she loved being home. Marilyn was her most comfortable caring for others. This not only included her family, but also anyone who stepped into her home or was blessed to know her.
