Martha Teresa Canova
August 7, 1945 - January 7, 2023
Martha Canova (nee Sparta), 77, of Nutley, NJ, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Raised in Lyndhurst, NJ, Martha was a graduate of Lyndhurst High School, where she met her best friend and husband of 53 years, Douglas. Martha, known familiarly as “Marty” and affectionately as “Church Lady,” worked at Temple B’nai Israel before beginning her tenure of 28 years at Vincent United Methodist Church, both of Nutley, the township where she raised her four children.
Daughter of Edward and Rose Sparta, Martha is predeceased by her parents, beloved husband, Douglas, brothers, William and Edward, brother-in-law, Howard Bayer, and sister-in-law, Maureen Sparta. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Carol Bayer, brother-in-law, Remo (Josie) Canova, and cousin/sister-in-heart, Elaine (James) Gattuso. Martha is also survived by her many nieces and nephews, who loved their “Aunt Mart.”
Carrying on Martha’s loving legacy are her four children and their spouses, Christine (Emanuel) Chrysoulakis, Matthew (Larissa) Canova, Stephen Canova, and Brian (Amy) Canova, as well as her seven granddaughters, all of whom Nana “loved to the Moon and back,” Rose, Keira, Ava, Mia, Madison, Matilda and Leila.
There will be a memorial visitation at the S.W. Brown and Son Funeral Home, 267 Centre Street, Nutley, NJ, on Thursday, January 12, 2023 from 4 to 7 p.m.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, 17 Monsignor Owens Place, Nutley, NJ, on Friday, January 13, 2023 at 10:30 a.m.
