Obituary for Mary O. Mahon (Rizzolo)

Mary Mahon, 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 5, 2023, at home surrounded by family and friends. Mary was the daughter of the late Irma (Ferrara) and Alfred Rizzolo. Mary grew up in Kearny, NJ, and graduated from Kearny High School. She continued her education and graduated from Berkeley Secretarial School in 1951. Mary worked for the FBI in Newark, NJ for 6 years before marrying her lifelong husband and jitterbug partner, Tom. They moved from Bloomfield to Nutley -- a town she loved-- more than 50 years ago to raise their family. She then went on to work for Newark VoTech for 22 years before retiring. Mary loved to spend time gardening in her yard with her beloved dog, CoCo, always at her side. She enjoyed her weekends socializing with the customers and staff at her son’s restaurant, The American Bistro, and every St. Patrick’s Day would bake Irish Soda Bread for everyone.

Mary Mahon is survived by her sister Joanne DeHays. She was a loving mother to her children, Kenneth Mahon, Tricia Mahon-Bartell, Marybeth Mahon, daughter-in-law, Donna Mahon and grandchildren, Jillian, Kaitlyn and Kelly Mahon and Faith and Joseph Bartell, thieir father, Joe Bartell, sisters-in-law, Barbara Mahon, Geri Mahon, and brother-in-law, Joe Duggan and many cherished nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, wonderful neighbors, cousins, close friends and her loving and devoted caregivers, Jessie and Anna. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas P. Mahon and their son Thomas Mahon, Jr.

The funeral will be Saturday, February 11th at 8:30am from the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, (www.swbrownandson.com), 267 Centre St., Nutley.

The funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Bloomfield.

The interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Visitors will be received at the funeral home on Friday, February 10th from 4 – 8pm.
