Obituary for Nicholas J. Serio

Nicholas J. Serio, 86, of Nutley, passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2018. Born and raised in Newark, he was the son of the late Joseph and Beatrice.
Mr. Serio came to Nutley 54 years ago and was a Public Affairs Manager with PSEG in Newark for 37 years before retiring. As manager, he oversaw community relations in Essex, Somerset, Hunderton and Mercer Counties. Many outreach endeavors were coordinated in his hometown with the Nutley Fire Department and Nutley Police Department.
Nicholas also fulfilled the role of PSEG’s representative liaison between the company and the Retiree’s Club. On the day of his retirement, it was declared “Nicholas J. Serio Day” in Essex by the County Executive for his efforts in strengthening the bond between the public and private sectors.
Nicholas was also a proud U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. While serving his Country, he spent his time aboard the USS LST 515. During his service time, he was awarded a European Occupation Medal.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Dolores (Speiser) Serio, his devoted children, Susan Jack, Jeff, Janet and Kevin Serio and his loving grandchildren, Valerie Crawford, Meredith and Bridget Jack and Stephen Serio. He also leaves his brother, Joseph Serio, sisters, Roseann Cicalese and Mildred Gearl and his step-brother and sister, Ciro Abate and Carmel Beach. He was predeceased by his brother Frank Serio and his step-father, Jerry Abate.
During his retirement, Nicholas loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors. He also enjoyed visits to Ocean Beach at the Jersey Shore and was a dog lover.

A Funeral Service will be conducted at the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, 267 Centre St., Nutley on Thursday, August 30 at 10:30 am, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield.

Relatives and friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2-4 pm & 7-9 pm.
