Obituary for Raffaela A. Notari (Cuniberti)

Raffaela Notari, 99, of Belleville, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2023, at Daughters of Israel Nursing Home in West Orange.

She was born to the late Annibale and Giovanni Cuniberti on January 20, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey. Rae, as she was known graduated from St. Michaels’s High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Kean College in 1974.

She married Paul Notari in 1950, and they lived together in Long Branch for six years before
relocating to Belleville.

Rae was predeceased by her sisters Flora Palumbo of Belleville and Connie Gialanella of Beach Haven. She is survived by her two sons Marc Notari of Arlington, Texas and John Notari of Belleville. She is also survived by three grandchildren; Robert Notari and his wife Hannah of Arlington, Texas, Jennifer Pitman and her husband Georgiy of Arlington, Texas, Eric Notari and his wife Emily of Richmond, Virginia, as well as three great grandchildren; Benjamin, Sophia and William Notari. Rae was predeceased by her loving husband in 1989.

Rae loved young children and would delight in sharing her experiences of teaching second grade with her family. She was a den mother who went camping and taught her sons to play catch and basketball. She always put family first, and God help anyone who spoke or acted against her children. She so loved her grandchildren and would get on the floor or into the mud to play with them. She often said that when she first saw her future husband Paul, she knew that they would someday marry. She was a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at Our lady of Mount Carmel Church in Nutley and taught second grade at Our Lady of Good Counsel School for many years. She had a special relationship with Barbara Mittler, her daughter in law, who she considered the daughter she never had.

Viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 from 4pm – 7pm at S.W. Brown and Son Funeral Home located at 267 Centre Street Nutley, New Jersey. A Funeral Mass Celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday morning 10am, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church 120 Prospect Street, Nutley, New Jersey.
