Obituary for Ruth E. Downes (Marschner)
Ruth E. Downes, 85 of Belleville, passed away on Tuesday November 24, 2020. Born in raised in Jersey City, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Helen (Sybel) Marschner. Ruth lived in Nutley before coming to Belleville 20 years ago and was teacher with the Township of Belleville Board of Education before retiring and previously taught in the Boonton school system. She was a graduate of Houghton College in Houghton, NY. Mrs. Downes was also a customer service representative at the Howard Saving Bank and was an active member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Nutley.
Predeceased by her daughter, Cheryl Pornovets, Ruth is survived by her beloved husband, Rev. George A. Downes III, her son George A. Downes IV, her son-in-law, John Pornovets and her loving grandchildren, Christopher, Andrew and Thomas. She was the dear sister of Richard and the late Frank Marschner.
Relatives and friends will be received at the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, 267 Centre St. Nutley on Sunday November 29 from 1:30 to 4:30 pm and Monday November 30 from 10:30-11:30 am.
A Funeral Service will be conducted on Monday at 11:30 am followed by burial at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.
