Obituary for Sabino "Sam" Battaglia

Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and community leader.

Sabino “Sam” Battaglia, lifelong resident of Nutley, passed away Monday, October 31, 2022. Born in Newark and raised in Nutley, he was the son of the late Joseph and Concetta Gengaro Battaglia. He dedicated his life to his family and service to others. A true leader and activist who spent his entire adult life giving to his community and those in need. His life and legacy will be remembered for his selfless commitment to others.
Sam Battaglia attended Holy Family school and graduated from Nutley High School in 1964. He excelled in football and was recognized for his skills with a 4-year athletic scholarship to the University of Maryland where he graduated in 1968 having earned a BS degree in business administration and marketing. Sam worked in the energy industry for over 45 years and was a senior executive with Royal Dutch Shell, the Coastal Corporation and Dominion.
Sam was active for over 50 years in Nutley public service organizations. He served for 12 years as a trustee on the Nutley Board of Education from 1984 to 1996 and was the board’s president from 1992 to 1996. Sam was elected to the Nutley Board of Commissioners in 1996 and served as the Director in the Department of Public Affairs. He was a trustee for the First Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey from 1974 until his passing. He was also a trustee emeritus at Beacon College in Leasburg Florida from 1997 to 2022. Sam was a member in the Nutley chapter of UNICO and was the sitting president for the Third Half Club of Nutley since 2007. He was a recreational league football coach with his best friend Charlie Piro and is still fondly remembered by his players as “my first coach”. He was an avid Yankee and Giants fan and forever a Maryland Terrapin. He loved his time on the golf course and he fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning a home on the Jersey shore with his wife Kathie in Bradley Beach.
Sam is survived by his wife Kathleen (Pandolfi), daughter Kristen, son Joseph and his wife Erin, and his two grandsons, Aidan and Cade. His is also survived by his many nieces and nephews and friends that he held so dearly. He was predeceased by his brothers Alfred and Joseph.

Everyone is invited to go directly to St. Mary’s Church, in Nutley, New Jersey
at 10:00 am on Tuesday November 8, 2022, where the funeral mass will be celebrated.

The interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Montclair, New Jersey.

Visitors will be received at the S.W. Brown Funeral Home, 267 Centre Street, Nutley, NJ, on Monday, November 7th from 4-8pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey.
