Sister Eileen Hubbert, SSJ passed away on April 22, 2019. Formerly Sister Vincent Gerard, Sister had been a resident of Saint Joseph Villa since September, 2016. Sister Eileen's brother, Father
Joseph Hubbert, a Vincentian priest, presided at her funeral Mass at the Villa on April 26.
Sister Eileen was the first of four children born to devout parents, Gerard and Margaret
Hubbert. The family were parishioners of St. Timothy Parish in Philadelphia, a nurturing place for the Hubbert children. From an early age, the young Eileen was inspired by her first-grade teacher, Sister Mary Gerald, whom she dearly loved. No doubt, Eileen's three aunts and an uncle, all in Religious Life, were influential in Eileen's vocational desire.
Following graduation from St. Hubert's High School, Eileen entered the Sisters of Saint Joseph to begin her journey of 59 years. An elementary teacher for many of these years, and principal two times, she ministered in the Archdioceses of Philadelphia and Newark and in the dioceses of Allentown and Trenton. Later, after earning a degree in Pastoral Ministry, Eileen labored in a variety of parish programs that included service to youth, the bereaved, RCIA , Seniors and home-bound, to mention a few.
Showing compassion and concern for all, Sister Eileen was beloved by countless persons who had the good fortune to know her. Words that the pastor at Holy Family Parish in Nutley, New
Jersey, wrote upon her departure from there: "Sister always walked the extra mile." A tireless
Religious, Sister Eileen gave her all, all the time.
There will be a memorial mass celebrated on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at Holy Family Church in Nutley at 7p.m.
