Obituary for Betty Jane Young Rev.

Rev. Betty Jane Young, 70, Pastor Emeritus of Vincent United Methodist Church, Nutley passed away on October 25, 2013 at her home in Long Valley. Betty Jane was born in Jersey City to James and Elizabeth (Elliot) Young.
Rev. Young received her Master of Divinity Degree from Drew Theological School in Madison, NJ and was the first United Methodist woman pastor to serve Hudson County. In her pastoral career she served Covenant, Trinity and Lafayette United Methodist Churches all in Jersey City, New City (NY) United Methodist Church, and Vincent United Methodist Church in Nutley. She was the first woman District Superintendent for the Northern New Jersey Conference, overseeing the Eastern District.
Rev. Young served as a delegate of the former Northern New Jersey Conference to several of the United Methodist Church’s General and Jurisdictional Conferences. She served as an adjunct faculty member with the field education program at Drew Theological School and taught at several Schools of Christian Mission. She wrote several articles for the Circuit Rider magazine, a national church publication for clergy.
Rev. Young had a deep appreciation for music, especially for church hymns and Gospel music. She loved to sing and had a fine, melodious voice.
In Jersey City, Rev. Young helped to begin a program that sheltered battered women and CAUSE which provide food and inexpensive clothing and housewares for the poor. In New City, she actively supported the pro-choice program and in Nutley, she helped begin the church’s Care Pantry providing personal care items for those in need. She was a passionate and tireless advocate for women and the disadvantaged, seeking to live out her faith in Jesus Christ in meaningful and compassionate ways.
Predeceased by her parents and her brother, George Young, she leaves her dear friend, Marjorie Ruth Knapp and her care giver, Marilyn Davidson and her family.
A Memorial Service will take place at Vincent United Methodist Church, Nutley on Sunday, November 24 at 3 pm.
