Obituary for Jane T. Gerken

Retired U.S. Navy Commander, Dedicated kindergarten teacher for 40 years
Jane T. Gerken of Nutley, passed away peacefully on Sunday January 8, 2017 at her home. Born in Terra Haute, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Josephine (Tronalone) Talbott. Jane was raised in Newark, graduated from St. Augustine School and lived in Bloomfield before coming to Nutley in 1976. Mrs. Gerken was a kindergarten teacher for the City of Newark Board of Education for 40 years before retiring. She earned her undergraduate degree from Newark State Teachers College (now Keane University) and her Masters Degree in Guidance from Seton Hall University. A gifted musician and devoted church member, Jane was an accomplished classically trained pianist who was the volunteer organist at St. Mary’s Church for a period of time and member of the church choir for many years. She was also a member of the Rosary Altar Society, the Catholic Daughter of the Americas Court Gratia and was a long-time volunteer at Mother Teresa’s Soup Kitchen and Women’s Shelter at St. Augustine Church in Newark. In addition to her many accomplishments, Mrs. Gerken was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served for 26 years before retiring from the service at the rank of Commander.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert C. Gerken, her brother, Paul A. Talbott and wife, Lorraine (Lorry) and her sister, Hallie Justin. She was the dear aunt of Paul A., Jr., Richard J. and Michael R. Talbott, Mary Jo Candeletti and husband, James, George Szodoray and wife, Christine, Kathy Capela and husband, Edward and great aunt of Jessica Talbott, Robert Candeletti, James Szodoray, Carlie and Garret Capela.
Funeral from the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home 267 Centre St. Nutley on Saturday January 14 at 8:30 am.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Nutley at 9:30 am followed by burial at Preakness Reformed Church Cemetery in Wayne.
Relatives and friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm.
