Obituary for Robert Christian Gerken

Retired Navy Commander
Robert Christian Gerken, of Nutley, N.J., passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 11, 2017. Born in Jersey City NJ, Robert was the son of the late Christian and Anna (Morrison) Gerken. He was raised in Kearney, N.J., graduated from Kearney High School. He was educated at RPI and Northwestern. Robert worked as an engineer at Screen Products Company. He also lived in Wayne and Bloomfield, N.J., before moving to Nutley in 1976.
Robert was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served for 26 years before retiring from the service at the rank of commander. He was a B17 crew member during the war.
Robert will be remembered for his many years of participating in the St. Mary’s choir. He also enjoyed collecting and repairing old clocks as well as an avid bread and cake maker. His artistic flair was manifested in his clever, elaborate, and humorous cake decorating.
He was preceded by his wife of 49 years, Jane (Talcott) Gerken and his brother John M. Gerken. He is was the dear uncle of Thomas Gerken, Rebecca Sido & her husband Philip and John Gerken Jr. Robert was the great uncle to Laura Sido Pond & her husband Jeffrey, Kathryn Sido, Nicola Gerken, William Gerken and great-grand uncle of Teagan and Riley Pond. He was also the dear uncle of Paul A. Jr., Richard J. and Michael R. Talbott; Mary Jo Candeletti and her husband, James; George Szodoray and wife, Christine; Kathy Capela and husband, Edward; and great-aunt of Jessica Talbott, Robert Candeletti, James Szodoray, and Carlie and Garret Capela. Robert is also survived by his brother in law, Paul Talbott and his wife Lorraine Talbott and a sister in law Halle Justin.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church in Nutley on Tuesday at 10:45 a.m.
The interment will follow at Preakness Reformed Church Cemetery in Wayne, N.J.
Relatives and friends will be received at the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday from 9-10:30 a.m.
