Proud Veteran and Nutley American Little League Icon
Salvatore “Sam” “Pops” Cocco, Sr., of Nutley passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday evening. December 16, 2016 A proud World War II Veteran who participated in the D-Day invasion, Pops was a member of the US Army signal corps, serving in Europe and earning the Good Conduct Medal. Born on September 10, 1920 to the late Nicola & Lucia Cocco, and raised in the Silver Lake section of Belleville, he also lived for many years in Nutley Parkside Apartments. He volunteered for decades overseeing the grounds of the Nutley American Little League. He took pride in the condition of the fields, getting them ready for opening day each year for the kids to enjoy. Pops was also a devoted Nutley sports fan; he would often be seen watching local football and softball games sitting in his lawn chair. During his younger years, he caddied for the likes of Sam Snead and Ben Hogan at Forest Hill Field Club.
Pops is survived by his wife Rose (DeZarlo) Cocco of 69 years, two sons, Domenick & his wife, Lois, and Salvatore Jr. & his wife Donna; four grandchildren, Robert, Michael & his wife Katie, Daniel, and Ashley Hubbert & her husband Marc, and two great-grandchildren, Rosemary and Charles Salvatore.
The funeral service will begin on Monday at 10:30 AM at S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home.
The interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday from 3-7 PM and Monday from 9:30am until service time.
