Obituary for Zenaida Mercado Dr.
Retired Physician
Dr. Zenaida Mercado, of Wayne, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017. Born on November 6, 1933 in Libmanan, Camarines Sur, Philippines, she was the daughter of the late Matea (Abante) & Elias Madrid.
Zenaida was 1 of 14 children and was an esteemed graduate of the University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University in Manila, Philippines. She graduated with her Medical Doctorate degree in pathology and migrated to the United States where she completed her residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. She worked at a number of hospitals across the country from the west to east coast. Upon moving to New Jersey, she worked at St. Michaels in Newark. It was at one of the many hospital functions where she reunited with her previous classmate from the Philippines, Dr. Leon Rafer Mercado. They began working together at Clara Maass Hospital in Belleville. In 1962 the couple married and moved to Nutley where they raised a bunch of M&M’s (8 to be exact).
She is survived by her husband, Leon R. Mercado, 8 children, Mary Mercado, Myrna Fernandez, Monica Stenger, Maria Blackford, Milton, Mark, Michael & Maurice Mercado; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 8:30 a.m. from the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, 267 Centre St., Nutley.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Church in Nutley at 9:30 a.m.
The entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in No. Arlington
Visitors will be received at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association would be preferred.
